About
Mike Clarke and Clarke of the Karoo
"After
lecturing at hotel school in the UK and various food and beverage
positions, I arrived in South Africa as Touring Supporter for the 1974
British Lions, joined Southern Sun Hotels and worked in Cape Town,
Plettenberg Bay, Mauritius and Johannesburg.
After
working in the West Indies (Trinidad and Tobago) I returned to South
Africa and purchased "The Suikerbossie" in Hout Bay which I owned for
nearly fourteen years before moving to Knysna to build an old English
pub on the lagoon. That was the start of Crabs Creek Waterfront Tavern,
a concept based on my family's 600 year old coaching house near Chester
in
the U.K.
Eight
years
later I sold the business and eventually ended up in Barrydale,
converting an old butchery into "Clarke of the Karoo Restaurant and
Farmstall". Clarke of the Karoo, on the R62, has since become
a popular
stopover for the more descerning diner, for both breakfast and
lunch.
